There is a whole branch of psychology devoted to the topic but this blog is not about that. In this blog I want to share with you why we, a bunch of marine scientists and ocean nuts from the rural west coast of Scotland, have launched this shop for T-shirts and hoodies.<\/p>
Normally we spend years studying processes most of you will never hear about. We care about things most people don't even know exist like internal waves, copepods, manganese nodules or bathymetric maps. And what we find out is sometimes really important. So we spend months putting a scientific manuscript together that on publication few will read - mostly other researchers. If we are lucky and have a nice pics or videos to go with it a journalist might pen a short article about the wider issue we worked on in some newspaper or trade magazine or fellow ocean lovers share it via social media. And then we start on another project that we devote ourselves to for many years. And so our painfully acquired understanding of the ocean can end up having little consequence. Sometimes we predict decades in advance what problems are likely to arise yet we cannot stop or slow climate change, overfishing, ocean acidification or habitat destruction. While we can't 100% predict the future (often because of what people choose to do in the future), we often feel the same frustration that mythical seers were reported to experience - to know the future but not to be able to change it.<\/p>
So we try different approaches to get our knowledge reach beyond our community.
